Tara's Cross Banner

Tara's CrossABOUT TARA’S CROSS

Rescuers pulled George Bachmann, a New York City firefighter from Ten House, from beneath the rubble of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. He survived the terrorist attacks, but somehow, his memory had been temporarily left behind. As Bachmann recuperated, he knew he needed to remember what had happened and he needed to confront his dreams, which was not an easy task. His mind was privy to an unknown piece of history that drove him to the brink.

In this memoir, Tara’s Cross, Bachmann describes the unimaginable events at Ground Zero. He tells not only of his physical recovery, but also shares the return of his memory through a series of dreams. He reveals the details of the magnificent sighting on West Street where he witnessed the two highest ranking NYC officers saluting each other at the foot of the North Tower before they perished on 9/11.

A tale of survival and salvation, Tara’s Cross is a testament to how the mind and soul heal themselves and how the spirits of the honored dead guide them home. This love story, set against the backdrop of the attacks on the World Trade Center, is also one of courage and recovery.

Romancing the Million $$$ Ghost Cover Reveal BannerAbout the Book:

Eccentric tobacco tycoon Rodger Hawthorne III can have anything his heart desires except his dead wife, Sarah.  Feeling responsible for the car crash that killed her twenty years earlier, he offers one million dollars to anyone who can find her spirit and bring it to him within one week or the money is forfeited.  Six spiritually-challenged—but highly intuitive—women find his ad over the Internet and accept his challenge only to embark on a journey they didn’t quite expect that covers astral traveling, past life regressions and spiritual encounters of the unworldly kind.  While this book is lightly based on a true story of a real man who is offering one million dollars to anyone who can prove that spirits exist, this story is purely fictional.  Or is it?

Wrage-banner

With Halloween right around the corner, thoughts are of where to go to get into the right mood, right? Joseph Spencer, author of the occult crime thriller, Wrage, is here with us to tell us!

————————————

Field of Screams: Haunts for Halloween Fanatics

Since I write occult fiction and often set up shop at horror conventions, many friends, family and readers alike often ask me where I like to go to get my share of thrills and chills. If you’re looking to get into the spirit this Halloween season, I’ve compiled a list of America’s Wrage-200x300greatest attractions for you and your best ghoul to check out.

Salem, Massachusetts

There are so many attractions here which pay tribute to the town’s colorful past. Some of the fan favorites include Count Orlock’s Nightmare Gallery & Monster Museum, Cry Innocent – a live reenactment of the witchcraft examination of Bridget Bishop, Frankenstein’s Castle Wax Museum, Gallows Hill Theater, Salem Witch Hunt reenactment, Salem Witch Museum and Salem Witch Village. For more information, visit www.salem.org.
Pennhurst Asylum – Spring City, Pennsylvania

One of America’s most notorious mental health facilities originally opened as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded & Epileptic in 1908 was closed down by the government for patient abuse in 1987. In 2010, the administration building was reopened as a haunted house. For more information , visit www.pennhurstasylum.com.
Moundsville Penitentiary – Moundsville, West Virginia

During its more than 100 years in operation, the Moundsville Penitentiary in West Virginia was one of America’s most violent correctional facilities and the final stop for almost 1,000 criminals. Many men were hung or killed in the electric chair, while others were murdered by other prisoners. The prison closed in 1995, but according to some, the tortured spirits are still behind bars and in the bowels of the prison and may be seen or heard on a tour. To set up a tour, visit www.wvpentours.com.
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum – Reston, West Virginia

Once known as the Weston State Hospital, this asylum was home to thousands of people with mental illness, starting in 1864. Hundreds of people died here before the facility closed in 1994. Spirits are said to haunt the building and grounds today, dating back to the Civil War era when the asylum’s grounds served as a military post. Paranormal tours of the facility feature 2-hour visits to the asylum’s 4 main hot spots. For more information, visit www.trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com.
French Quarter Phantoms – New Orleans, Louisiana

Master storytellers who have studied New Orleans’ colorful history lead you on an amazing tour of one of the area’s most popular hot spots. You can pick from five different tours, which include the Ghost and Vampire Tour, Cemetary Tour, Treme Tour, True Crime Tour and Saints and Sinners Tour, or customize one for yourself. For information, visit www.frenchquarterphantoms.com.
Lincoln’s Ghost Walk – Springfield, Illinois

This is in my backyard in central Illinois and one of my favorite attractions in our great state’s capitol. Over the course of 12 city blocks and 90 minutes, you’ll learn a side of President Abraham Lincoln that you can’t find anywhere in the history books. For information, visit www.springfieldwalks.com.
Lemp Mansion – St. Louis, Missouri

Over the years, the mansion was transformed from the stately home of millionaires, to office space, decaying into a run-down boarding house, and finally restored to its current state as a fine dinner theatre, restaurant and bed and breakfast. The scene of  triumph and tragedy, with a background of intrigue, scandal and suicide, visitors have reported a wide range of phenomena at the Mansion. For information, visit www.lempmansion.com.
Moore Home – Villisca, Iowa

One the morning of June 10, 1912, the small mid-western community of Villisca, Iowa awoke to find eight of their own had been brutally murdered by an axe during the middle of the night. The walls of this old home today continue to protect the identity of the vicious murderer who bludgeoned to death the entire family of Josiah Moore and two overnight guests. Open for tours today, the old house is said to be the site of a number of paranormal activities. For information, visit www.villiscaiowa.com.

Stanley Hotel – Estes Park, Colorado

This old hotel was built in the early 1900’s by F.O. Stanley, who created the Stanley Steam Engine — a steam powered horseless carriage. The majestic Georgian style hotel opened in 1909, catering to the rich and famous.  In addition to its regular guests, the hotel is also said to play host to a number of other worldly visitors. The most notable is F.O. Stanley himself who is most often seen in the lobby and the Billiard Room, which was his favorite room when he was still alive. For information, visit www.stanleyhotel.com/tours.
The Queen Mary – Long Beach, California

Resting in Long Beach Harbor is the HMS Queen Mary, a colossal ship that was bigger, faster and more powerful than the Titanic. The 1,000-foot ship began her life when the first keel plate was laid in 1930 at the John Brown shipyard in Clyde, Scotland. The depression held up her construction between 1931 and 1934, but she was finally completed, making her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936. After 1,001 successful Atlantic crossings, she was permanently docked and soon became the luxury hotel that she is today. Today, the museum-hotel ocean liner is said to be called home to a number of  ghosts including  ghostly children playing by the pool and the spirit of a seventeen-year-old sailor killed while escaping a fire. For information, visit www.queenmary.com.

This memoir describes the challenges a young man faces in achieving his dream of becoming a veterinarian. Even a period of homelessness and limited resources do not interfere with his commitment to achieve success. And this is only the beginning! Soon he is faced with the challenges of working in the jungles of Panama, facing the ravages of a roaming black jaguar and the defenses of a native village against the entrance of man or beast. Then, how about Haiti, where the Tonton Macoute militias believe in instant justice, rarely valuing life, or Columbia, where the drug lords have absolute rule. As if that isn’t enough, consider working in the African continent, along the tales surrounding the first shipment of Charolais cattle to the United States or the many facets of working with the wild mustangs in Colorado. SUMMARY:

Twin sisters separated by war, bound by love…

After the death of their father, twin sisters Maggie and Matty Becker are forced to take positions with officers’ families at a nearby fort. When the southern states secede, the twins are separated, and they find themselves on opposite sides of America’s bloodiest war.

In the south, Maggie travels with the Hamiltons to Bellevue, a plantation in west Tennessee. When Major Hamilton is captured, it is up to Maggie to hold things together and deal with the Union cavalry troop that winters at Bellevue. Racism, politics and a matchmaking stepmother test Maggie’s resourcefulness as she fights for Bellevue, a wounded Confederate officer and the affections of the Union commander.

In the north, Matty discovers an incriminating letter in General Worthington’s office, and soon she is on the run. With no one to turn to for help, she drugs the wealthy Colonel Cole Black and marries him, in hopes of getting the letter to his father, the governor of Michigan. But Cole is not happy about being married, and Matty’s life becomes all about survival.

Two unforgettable stories of courage, strength and honor.

Find on AMAZON.

Q: Congratulations on the release of your latest book, HAZARDOUS UNIONS. What was your inspiration for it?

KAT: Thank you! I’d always wanted to write a holiday themed book, and to be able to do it with another author. When I came up with the idea of doing a Christmas book, Alison Bruce was the person I wanted to collaborate with. Together we hashed out the details of the book.

ALISON: Being asked was an honor. The whole process was a great adventure.

Q: Tell us something interesting about your protagonist.

KAT: Matty loves to read, so much that she is often quoting Shakespeare and Poe throughout the story.

ALISON: Maggie took her father’s history lesson to heart and often quotes her mother’s German proverbs.

Q: How was your creative process like during the writing of this book and how long did it take you to complete it? Did you face any bumps along the way?

Hazardous_Union_Front_CoverKAT: I knew very little about the Civil War and so I needed to do a ton of research. Once I knew my plot and where I was going I wrote this story in three weeks.

ALISON: I knew a fair amount about the politics involved in the Civil War but I needed to get a regular person’s eye view of the time. So, I needed to do a ton of research too. Most of what happens to Maggie is a direct result of that research and asking myself, how would she react to these situations.

Q: How do you keep your narrative exciting throughout the creation of a novel?

KAT: With Matty it was easy because she is so serious and yet, she is constantly quoting Shakespeare or Poe. I write my characters to be real individuals. Sometimes what they say or do comes naturally.

ALISON: Maggie is the practical one. She’d rather be outgoing like her sister or clever like Miss Patience, but she’s the one who takes care of things and ultimately takes charge. At the same time, she’s young and inexperienced. Some of the decisions she thinks are practical turn out to be anything but.

Q: Do you experience anxiety before sitting down to write? If yes, how do you handle it?

KAT: Yes, sometimes I do if I don’t know where I am going with a story. I usually take a break and re-hash all my notes to see if I can’t find the problem. Once I find it the anxiety goes away and I can write.

ALISON: I don’t get anxious when I write, but I do get a little manic at times either because something is keeping me from writing–like other jobs, the kids, an appointment I’m already five minutes late for…

Q: What is your writing schedule like and how do you balance it with your other work and family time?

KAT: I write everyday when I’m doing a book. This can sometimes be tricky if my boys are busy with sports or I need to work, but I find the time and sometimes that is late at night when everyone is asleep.

ALISON: It’s a juggling act. My kids always come first, but they’re old enough to also take up the slack around the house and they are invested in my books. In addition to being an author, I’m a publications manager, awards administrator, freelance writer, editor and graphic designer. Each job ebbs and flows throughout the week, month and year, so a rigid schedule isn’t practical. It’s a constant challenge to keep all the balls in the air, but it suits me better than a 9-5 job.

Q: How do you define success?

KAT: Success is different for everyone. I’m successful in a lot of things in my life; my family, my friends, my faith, my career.

ALISON: I came across a great quote: “To find out what one is fitted to do, and to secure an opportunity to do it, is the key to happiness.” I’m fitted to be a storyteller and I get to do that. That’s success.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring writers whose spouses or partners don’t support their dreams of becoming an author?

KAT: That can be tough. Be strong and believe in yourself.

ALISON: My initial reaction is to get a different partner. This may not be practical, however. Honestly, I’m blessed. My kids support my writing habit. My friends and extended family are proud of me. There was a time when they thought I was a little crazy, but they never tried to squash my dreams. Any persistent nay sayers have dropped out of my life.

Q: George Orwell once wrote: “Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.” Do you agree?

KAT: No. I love to write—to create characters and stories and to have the ability to touch my readers through those stories.

ALISON: I do agree with the driven part but my demon and I are old friends who understand each other and enjoy the other’s company… even if we do yell at each other now and then.

Q:  Anything else you’d like to tell my readers?

KAT: I love to hear from readers so please drop me a line on my Facebook page or via my website.

ALISON: I love hearing from people too. Fair warning: I am also a mystery writer. Be nice or you might end up dead in my next book. 😉

ENGINE_24This book is a collection of five short stories written by Joe Corso, a retired fire fighter from notes he compiled whilst in service.

Whether you want a glimpse into the true life of a fire fighter, or are just looking for a fantastic collection of stories, this is definitely the book for you!

The author has an amazing ability to bring his stories to life, his vivid descriptions of the locations, situations and emotions felt has you sitting on the edge of your seat, itching to turn the page to find the outcome and yet not wanting the story to end.

Each story is completely different, but all contain the crew of Engine 24 of the FDNY to whom the book is dedicated.

This is a compelling collection of short stories. I finished them feeling that I had been allowed a privileged insight not only into the very real dangerous world of a fire fighter, but also, that I had been able to  feel the sense of the comradeship, dedication, duty and loyalty to fellow workers they share.

I hope the author continues to write more FIRE stories for his number one fan!
