“The bedroom scenes are phenomenal, and the romance and excitement in the spaces between love scenes are just as wonderful. The book emphasizes the importance of honesty in any relationship, and it is one of the best books I’ve read this year.” – Chasia Lloyd

Genre: Thriller

Reece Culver and his friend Haisley Averton travel to Scotland with only one thing on their minds – fishing. After witnessing an automobile accident involving a freelance journalist they quickly realize that something far greater than a crash caused his SUV to sink into the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

With increasing curiosity, Reece inserts himself into the complicated life of Marie Rhodes who is in the middle of her own crises as she watches her 20-year marriage crumble.

Realizing that they’ll never make it out fishing, Haisley uses his skills in computer forensics to find out who hacked into Karl Rhodes’ office computer at Draecon International and made it appear that he’d remotely accessed the dead journalists laptop. As Haisley combs through logs on the chief of strategy’s computer he stumbles upon an even bigger plot involving a secret drone factory somewhere in the United Kingdom, what looks like funds being embezzled out of Draecon International, and a plot that threatens the national security of the U.K.

Reece spends increasingly greater amounts of time with Marie Rhodes trying to learn what she knows and soon finds that he can’t resist the temptation of falling in love with the woman of his dreams. But as things heat up he questions her true motives.

When Karl Rhodes’ executive secretary is found dead Reece agrees to protect Marie’s soon to be ex-husband Karl. In a tricky game of cat and mouse Reece travels the globe as he tries to keep Marie, her husband, and Karl’s mistress out of harms way, and unknowingly puts himself directly into the crosshairs of a hired assassin.

Book Excerpt:

Saturday June 8, 2013

Julian had been told the target would be traveling south along the coastal road. With a practiced hand he pivoted the stock of the Russian-made sniper rifle on its black steel swivel mount atop the bipod legs and aimed toward the highway below. The SUV would be passing right through his sight . . . there. A chilly breeze blew through the tent, rippling the damp cotton shirt that lay molded to his back. He wasn’t nervous, but he did tend to sweat as the killing hour approached. He regarded the unpleasant sensation as just part of the job. It wasn’t like anyone would ever find out.

Peering through the custom-made rifle scope, he adjusted the magnification between his thumb and index finger, zooming in on the worn white strands of the highway’s center line several hundred yards below. As he rotated the knob back out, he spotted the farthest flag he’d placed in the branches of a nearby tree. The strip of white plastic barely fluttered, telling him the wind was calm.

His square unshaven chin pressed firmly against the cold black stock of the Dragunov SVD, and he pushed upward, seating the steel magazine that housed multiple 7N1 steel-core sniper rounds. With its 151-grain projectile and velocity of 830 meters per second, it was perfect for this type of work.

A rifle was the best—precise, anonymous, and decisive. He ran the shot through his mind one more time. Envision what you want to have happen. He’d read about that in an e-zine, and he adopted it as part of his preparations, even though it was supposed to be part of his ten-year life plan. He didn’t need any plan. In ten years he’d be rich and retired on a private island in the Caribbean.

The tracking device he’d stuck under the rear bumper would tell him when the SUV was near. It would approach on its way south toward the city of Talbert. He’d picked the perfect spot. The narrow Scottish road curved left around a large hill, and the vast expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean spread beyond the guardrail.

Confirm the license plate BV-061-EK, lead the target, and pan upward to the windshield. He’d draw a bead on the man’s head, squeeze the trigger, and watch as the windshield filled with a fine red mist. He’d envisioned the heavy vehicle veering sideways and crashing through the flimsy rusted guardrail before plunging into the depths of the sea. The driver would be dead before he realized how freezing cold that water was.

As the assassin waited patiently enduring the wet chill that reminded him of his home on Bainbridge Island, he monitored the moving red dot on his cell phone. A young woman with a yellow scarf drove past in her blue Volvo sedan. His stomach growled, and he remembered the bacon he’d had at the inn. The slabs were thick and cooked only in patches. Typical British cuisine.

The dot was rapidly approaching, and he shifted his attention to a silver Nissan Pathfinder rapidly making its way up the road. It carried two occupants. Damn it, he thought as a maroon BMW X5 came around the corner. The Pathfinder would pass in front just as the BMW entered his field of fire.

He could feel a drop of sweat rolling down the knobs of his spine. He zeroed in the rifle scope on the BMW windshield. The cross hairs remained steady as the SUV slowed to make the curve. He saw the Pathfinder pass through in a blur. He had a split second of clearance as he squeezed the trigger. The windshield misted red and flashed beyond his line of sight.

Rhenna MorganI write for the same reason I read—to escape reality.

Don’t get me wrong, my life rocks. I have two, beautiful little girls, a good husband, a steady job, and the kind of friends who will take you out back and beat you if you hurt me. But just like most other women, I’ve got endless obligations.

So, when the world beats me down, I slip into something…less realistic. Romance is a must. So is steamy sex. Nothing thrills me more than the fantasy of exciting new worlds, strong, intuitive men and the sigh of, “Oh, if only that could happen to me.”

So, if you’re picking up a book of mine, expect the unlikely. In the real world, most women don’t get swept off their feet by some billionaire Adonis or fall down the bunny hole into an alternate realm. In my fictional world, it’s a pretty safe bet.

Romantic Escape for the women who need it.

Hey everyone! My name is Alyssa and I am the author of the Mimi’s alyssaAdventures in Baking series that teaches children how to bake through a fun storybook cookbook. I have always believed baking and cooking is a fun way to get kids hands on in the kitchen and hands off the electronics. Sometimes you just have to get your hands dirty!

I have been a chef my whole career, and venturing into the publishing world is a scary and daunting one. While on the road to getting published I found myself surfing the web reading articles, blog posts and whatever I could to gain knowledge about what to expect.  These were my top five tips that saved my sanity:

  1. You will need a literary agent to be able to get into or even seen by a big time publisher, and I am sorry to say but they are as hard to get as landing a publisher. My biggest suggestion for this process if you have the means is to find a Writer’s Digest conference that offers a “pitch slam”. The conferences are really expensive to attend but you can buy a pass just to go to the pitch slam.  A pitch slam is where you will be thrown into a room of agent hungry authors (seriously) where you will have three minutes to pitch your story and most importantly yourself! Do your research and figure out what agents are best suited for you and your book. Make a list and once they give you the map of the room plan your attack. You only get 90 minutes to see as many agents as you can. It is stressful but worth it. I received 7 different agents cards that were interested in my book.  I received more attention in 90 minutes than I did over the past 4 months of submitting my manuscript via email.  It will cost you, but well worth it compared to the months of checking your email vigorously hoping for a response. Sanity saved…for now.
  2. Okay you have landed an agent, (Wooohooo!) what now? Well first, you need to definitely celebrate. I know it sounds corny but this industry is all about small victories. You deserve some celebration! My biggest advice though will be do not sit back and wait. Keep writing, and keep searching for publishers that you think may be a good fit for you, preferably the small houses that will accept unsolicited manuscripts. Just because you have an agent does not mean they will be able to sell it. You need to continue to search for the best possible fit for your book. My agent had my book for over a year, and then I decided to take fate into my own hands… One year and three books later…. It’s possible. Anything is possible just as long as you’re willing to fight for it.
  3. Unless you’re famous I am sorry to say but you are going to be the biggest part of your marketing team. Once you’re published is when the hard part comes (unreal right? Like this process hasn’t been hard enough?) Go to stores, talk to the manager, arrange book signings, go to schools, blogs anything you can. Getting yourself in front of as many people as possible is your goal.
  4. Find solace in others experiences. I found that a forum called absolutewrite.com brought me comfort in times of rejection. But remember that everyone’s path is different. Try and enjoy the ride and always celebrate the small victories. Sanity found… for now.
  5. Ever. Give. Up…. If you find yourself ready to throw it all away (which trust me you will, multiple times) just keep repeating that to yourself. Never ever give up. The end result will make it all worth it.

last stop parisSYNOPSIS

A full-throttle adventure through modern Europe and the Mediterranean … that’s part thriller, part mystery, and all rollicking ride.

Pearce again accomplishes every thriller writer’s aim: creating characters that the readers can root for and a believable, fast-paced storyline. The climax and denouement bring the storylines together neatly, but fans will see that there may yet be room for another book in the series.

When readers last saw Eddie Grant in Treasure of Saint-Lazare (2012), he was hot on the trail of Nazi war loot in the company of his on-again, off-again lover, Jen. As readers return to Eddie’s shadowy world of undercover deals and thugs in the employ of crime bosses, they find a quieter, more mature Eddie, now married to Aurélie, a scholar of some note, and living in pleasant domestic bliss. Onto this romantic scene come several of Eddie’s friends, who alert him to suspicious activity within his social circle, involving a man with criminal intentions and an interest in gold. Shortly afterward, a mysterious murder implicates another character from Eddie’s past. As he looks into the matter, Aurélie soon finds herself in danger; at the same time, Jen reappears in Eddie’s life, and he’s simultaneously drawn to her and eager to avoid falling into bed with her again. Soon, he and his comrades must track down another ring of criminals and protect themselves from fatal retribution.

GUEST REVIEW

Paige Donovan’s life is perfect. New promotion and a great boyfriend. All that changes with one phone call. Suddenly she finds herself headed to Black River, Colorado. Once there a white wolf keeps showing up. Including her bedroom.

Riley Grey wanted Paige from the moment they meet. Not even hos father’s disapproval can change that. Now he just has to convince Paige to stay in Black River. Oh and there’s the minor fact he’s a wolf in human skin.

Just as things start to look up everything changes.

I really loved the use of first person in this. Which is very unusual for me. Getting to see inside Paige’s head really added to the anticipation for me. Both Paige and Riley were will written and developed characters. I would have liked to know more about their father.

I really liked the challenges that Riley and Paige faced. You could tell that the writer had thought these out. My favorite part of he book however was the ending. It was such a twist on the typical ending. This is a great lazy day (or anytime) read. I would recommended this book to a friend.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW

I haven’t read any paranormal romance in a while but this book reminded of how I miss it.

We start off with Paige meeting white “puppy” as a little girl, whom is really Riley who instantly falls for her. Flash forward, they don’t see each other for another 13 years, and Paige has a pretty normal life. She has a great job, where she just got a promotion and a great boyfriend. Soon though, her world comes crashing down as she catches her boyfriend cheating and her dad dies.

Turns out, her father left her the family cabin, where she had once met Riley, and she flees to the cabin. Soon, she starts to fall for Riley and things get crazy, but to say more would be giving away the book. There are a lot of obstacles thrown in their path.

Overall, it was a solid paranormal romance and mostly what I expected. Though Paige was annoying at times, I really like Riley and the book was a good read.

It includes a history, evolution and culture of busking, photos, interviews and commentary with 35 of NYC’s prominent street musicians. A cherry red vinyl record, of 11 tracks of original music, mastered by Grammy and Academy Award winning Reuben Cohen, (Slumdog Millionaire, Frozen), is page 200. At the culmination of the project, 30 participants went to Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, where they covered Billy Joel’s hit song, New York State of Mind. A 12 minute short film and music video were created from that day and are included with the book, making this project, truly multi-media. The project won a Book of the Year Award in the category of Performing Arts & Music.

Would you call yourself a born writer?

Sure, why not? Haha! No, I have a natural inclination towards the written word, but, talent, like all things, if not exercised, will die. I like what Hemingway says, writing is like architecture, not interior design.

What was your inspiration for The Noise Beneath the Apple®?

I was a free-lance writer at the time. Getting paid per piece, per word and perhaps! I came across the New York City street music scene and totally dug it, so I interviewed and wrote a piece on one of the performers, Luke Ryan—dubbed The Queens Cowboy. Anyway, it got published and people seemed to like it, so I did a few more, then I thought I should compile them into a little book; a trade paperback for example. That’s where I started, but, as you can tell….it grew! Today, that little book is a 200 page, 8lb. 12” x 12” coffee table book, with a vinyl record, short film, music video and a cover of Billy Joel’s, New York State of Mind!

What themes do you like to explore in your writing?

I like people’s stories, which is why I tend to read non-fiction. Take a moment, sit on a bench in a park or ride a bus in a city, and in the faces of passersby, you will see hope, fear, joy, tears, laughter, sadness, regret, ambition….oh the stories passing by are endless and sometimes, I reach out and grab one.

How long did it take you to complete the novel?

TNBTA® took 3.5 years and the book I am currently working on, about the SF Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is one I thought of about a year ago. This past year has been spent getting permissions, gathering interested parties, doing some interviews and conducting TONS of research. We are actually going to start shooting the photos for the Sisters book in a week! Yahoo! There is still at least a year of heavy lifting to do with this project, but it is underway.

Are you disciplined? Describe a typical writing day.

Hahaha! I would be the most undisciplined person ever, drinking coffee and daydreaming out the window, under my disco ball, if it wasn’t for my good friend and former boss, Ron Escalante, from Starbucks Coffee Company, who I worked for in the early-mid nineties! Ron identified my flaw of saying yes to everything, then getting overwhelmed and having 18 ‘near finished’ tasks littering my desk. He got me a Day Planner and sent me to a class on how to use said Day Planner. That simple act was a rudder for my journey. Today—(and every day), I get up, get my coffee, go to my space and write for a designated time. I have everything laid out; what walk I’m going to take, my day job schedule, what book I’m reading and when I get to read it, tons of tasks, etc.… I know it sounds extreme, but, I am a Virgo—and it works brilliantly for me. I even schedule Ron in for dinner every couple of months! So, I have learned discipline and it has helped me accomplish a lot.

What did you find most challenging about writing this book?

There were TONS of challenges in creating TNBTA®, the least of which was the writing! The biggest challenge in the process was definitely a result of the generation of now. In a word, people flaked out a lot, and that was tough. They didn’t show up for interviews or showed up late, I’d get a last minute text that they had a headache and weren’t coming to the photo shoot, even the photographer dropped out midway through, leaving me to figure out how to finish the book. I am NOT a photographer. I had to improvise and do a lot of last minute finagling to complete the project all the while maintaining a positive attitude and the conviction that it would get done. After experiencing this level of unreliability, I had great pause about doing another such project!

The next very big challenge, was—(and is)—getting the book out there, promoting the work and spreading the word. This is something I have to work on every day. Great news; I just sent books to NIQUEA.D Boutiques in New York City. This is exciting and validating for me, as an independent author. NIQUEA.D are glamorous, high end jewelry, home décor boutiques, located in the Meatpacking District and on Third Avenue. TNBTA® is a perfect fit and I am delighted to be part of their family.

What do you love most about being an author?

One thing I love, is creating; the idea that I am contributing creative ideas that have value; that leave something behind that is bigger than me. That’s a great feeling

Did you go with a traditional publisher, small press, or did you self publish? What was the process like and are you happy with your decision?

Thank you for asking this. I like this question and I think it’s important. Had I created a small paperback, as originally thought, I might have pursued a traditional publishing route; however, once it became an art book; I knew I would be self-publishing. There are a few reasons for that, primarily, there is no money in art books, hence, there are very few publishers doing them. I could invest my time in finding a publisher or in doing the project. I chose the latter. The second thing is, the focus of my book, was to celebrate the culture of busking/street performance. Let’s face it, celebration doesn’t sell nearly as well as sex, hardship, misery, and so on. I really wanted to keep true to my vision, so, I needed to do it myself.

The hard costs; manufacture, printing, binding, interior design, photography were about $25,000.00. That doesn’t include collateral costs, or the fact that friends gave me GREAT deals on things. What this means, is that fundraising is a job in itself. I used Rockethub, a fantastic crowdfunding platform—(Gustavo Rodriguez is an awesome guy, who is a man of his word); I hosted events, held silent auctions and anything else I thought of to raise funds. I had tons of fabulous supporters; but there are two folks, Gaines Coleman and John Seiter, Patrons, if you will, who gave super-sized gifts that ushered the project over the finish line. This project wouldn’t have happened without them. I wonder where I should send their capes.
